Back to Add Disability History to Curriculum

Disability History and Awareness Day 31! Did you know:

On October 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Mental Retardation Facilities and Community Health Center Construction Act into law. This act provided federal funding for research centers to study causes of intellectual disabilities, increased funding to train teachers who work with children with disabilities, diagnostic treatment centers and community-based centers to care for people with intellectual disabilities. This led to considerable deinstitutionalization. Remember it cost more to imprision someone in an instutution than it does to allow them freedom of choice and a life like yours in community-based centers.
