Respond to immediate needs of Bangladesh cyclone survivors and longer term development

BRAC is the largest and one of the world's leading development organizations organizing the poor for their own self-empowerment. Founded in Bangladesh in 1972, BRAC works in almost every village in the country with microfinance, health, education, business and social development. When the Sidr Cyclone threatened to hit the southwest part of the country in November, BRAC staff working in the area immediately helped to evacuate people and is now responding with food, water, shelter and medical care. BRAC will help the poorest families, especially women-headed households, rebuild their homes and regain their means of livelihood. They donated $1 million of their own funds. BRAC earns 70% of its budget from service charges, fees and businesses. President Clinton just gave BRAC founder F.H.Abed his first Global Citizen Award in September.
