Last October 15, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, the strength of which comparable to 32 Hiroshima bombs, struck Central Visayas, which left 171 people killed, 375 people injured, and 20 more missing according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
An estimated 3.4 million people were affected. Tens of thousands of families are displaced as aftershocks continue. Around 20,034 families are currently staying in evacuation centers in Bohol.
The quake caused massive destruction to property in Bohol and Cebu. Some roads and bridges are still not passable, leaving some areas isolated.
Heartbreaking images have flooded social media, showing the extent of damage the earthquake has caused. Century-old churches and tourism centers were destroyed.
Once again, we are called upon to show our solidarity and bayanihan to help our kababayans in the Visayas.
Youth organizations under Tulong Kabataan have tied up with provincial organizations to organize a relief effort for Bohol and Cebu. They aim to gather donations and hold relief missions in Bohol.
Chyrene Moncada, a UP Diliman student from Bohol, together with her organization UP Kadugong Bol-anon, is leading the charge.
