Dear OCF Supporter,
Oral cancer rates in the US have been increasing. But over the last few years the rate has been alarming. So alarming, that the scientific community is beginning to use the word epidemic when describing the situation.
The HPV-16 virus, which has historically caused the vast majority of cervical cancer, is soon to become the dominant cause of oral cancer. In the US alone, 100 new individuals will be diagnosed with oral cancer and one person will die every hour of every day because of this disease. The fastest growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals. We cannot stop this virus from spreading; our only hope to save lives is through early discovery, public awareness and professional involvement. Accomplishing these tasks cannot be done without your direct support and involvement.
One of the biggest problems associated with oral cancer is that in the early stages of its development, it is often painless, and the physical signs may not be obvious. This makes it a very dangerous disease. We have to educate the public. OCF has a plan that will make a difference; but even in its smallest incarnation, that plan is a one million dollar effort. There are no government policies or plans in place to spend funds which will raise the awareness needed to save lives. We need you to partner with us to fill this vacuum.
OCF was recognized last year as the best small cancer nonprofit in the US. This and the many other accolades that we have received are because we have been able to accomplish so much in spite of limited human and financial resources. We are not a giant entity. We are a composite of many caring people, heavily dependent on volunteers. We have received awards for finding innovative ways to accomplish our mission that are often very inexpensive, and working with an entrepreneurial spirit. We have a track record that shows we can accomplish this goal. But it is only with your help that we can turn this disease around. We need you to take action today. We cannot do this without you. Please help us with your donations by mail or online (http://oralcancerfoundation.org/donations/), before this crisis becomes any worse.
The Oral Cancer Foundation represents the hope that those lost to oral cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face oral cancer will be supported, and that one day oral cancer will be eliminated. Only when many individuals raise their voices together and collectively contribute their resources, will change take place.
