from WSET.com on 5/29/09: "Bedford Co., VA - The D-Day Memorial and the risk it may close. The man who was the driving force behind the memorial, Bob Slaughter, told us that he's shocked by the announcement there's only enough cash on hand to last through the summer.

Foundation president William MacIntosh tells us he's worried the organization will not get enough donations in the struggling economy. He would like Congress to put it under the control of the National Park Service.

Slaughter says he's also surprised by the timing of the announcement, just a little more than a week before the big 65th anniversary commemoration.

"Terrible, terrible, could not be worse. Here they are talking about the 65th Anniversary of D-Day, the world is looking at this event. It's embarrassing. Truly embarrassing," Slaughter said.

Slaughter also says he's surprised MacIntosh announced his retirement. Slaughter hired him as his own replacement as Foundation Director."
