Back to The Emmet Foundation: Offering comfort to parents who lose a baby.

Please help stillbirth parents in Pennsylvania

I am asking for your help with a cause that is very close to my heart, the fight to get the CBRS Bill passed in Pennsylvania. If you do not live in Pennsylvania, but know someone who does, please forward this to them.

As it stands right now, when a baby is stillborn- which in PA is defined as a baby who dies anytime between 16 weeks gestation up until the second before birth- the parents are offered a death certificate, but not a birth certificate. The state does not recognize our children as having been born, and does not count them in infant morality records. This adds insult to our already overwhelming injury. It also makes no sense.

So far 27 states have passed a bill that allows parents to receive a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth. I have been working to get this bill passed in PA for three years now, and many others have been at it for even longer, but we still have yet to convince the Senate that Pennsylvania should be next.

SB620 (PA's Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth Bill) was introduced in the Pennsylvania Senate on March 13, 2009. It has been stalled in the Health & Welfare Committee since that time. In order to get this completely nonpartisan bill through, we need the support of our community.

That is where I hope you will come in. Could you please take just a few seconds to show your support by signing The Petition for a PA CBRS? For more information on this bill, or on this topic in general, please visit the Sweet Pea Project's Legislation page: www.sweetpeaproject.org/legislation.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for showing your support by signing the petition. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend.

peace,
Stephanie
