Back to Support NY Midwives' Legal Rights!

Peace On Earth Begins With Birth

In the face of unprecedented national C-Section rates and devastating increases in the U.S. maternal mortality rate, the STRENGTH, AUTONOMY and VITALITY of midwifery in the United States is more important than ever before.

Women deserve choice in birth. Midwifery not only empowers women in their choices of childbearing, it also protects women's and babies' lives.

Midwifery in New York State is on the verge of a momentous historical moment. The Midwifery Modernization Act is a HUGE step forward in availability and access to midwifery care for women and families throughout New York.

With films such as The Business of Being Born, and incendiary articles such as Extreme Birth (http://nymag.com/news/features/55500/), New York City midwives have come into the forefront of the media representation of Midwifery in the United States. This exposure provides a unique opportunity for midwives, women and their families to share their voices in support of midwifery. This legislature will set a precedent that will affect the lives of women and babies throughout this country. We can write the future of birth in the United States!

The Midwifery Modernization Act has the potential to bring midwifery care closer to the idealized midwifery systems of world-renowned European midwifery model. The European model centers around the midwife as an independent professional who is legally supported in their clinical autonomy.

The Midwifery Modernization Act would bring currently outdated midwifery practice-laws into line with contemporary and international midwifery practice, allowing midwives to legally and autonomously care for the women and families who seek out their care.

Locally, with the looming threat of the closure of St. Vincent's Labor and Delivery Unit, NYC midwifery practices (both hospital and home based) are at serious risk within the current legal structure. The Midwifery Modernization Act will help protect midwives by preserving the legality of midwifery practice beyond the sanctions of a single institution.

This Act will also improve midwifery outcomes by enhancing communication between midwives and hospital personnel during obstetric emergencies. Safer and easier emergency transfer will better protect women's and babies' lives, in addition to improving maternal satisfaction.
