Back to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in Philadelphia

Successful protest by campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia!

On Saturday, 18 July 2009, Friends of Animals, in collaboration with New York City’s Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages and Horses Without Carriages Intl, held a permitted vigil in downtown Philadelphia. Organizer Brandon Gittleman said, “We had a very successful protest on Saturday, receiving much encouragement from passers-by and accumulating 123 petition signatures.”

Thanks to the many people who contributed to and encouraged this act in the name of fairness. A special thanks to our youngest advocate, Wilson (5), who is effective in helping us get so many signatures in support of the horses.

According to a 76 Carriage Company employee -- who was, grudgingly, sharing the corner with the vigil and took photos of some of the horses’ advocates -- their company horses are extremely well taken care of. Over-fed even. And these horses LOVE to pull people around the streets. "I can just tell," said the horse driver.

Earlier, a carriage operator passed by to whom the advocates offered information. The driver said, "I know more about this business than you." Yet all we need to know is that the companies are using the animals.

Thank you for your continued support of our campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia!

If you have just a few minutes to spare this week, please call and email the Philadelphia City Council members and the Mayor. It is very important that they know how much support there is to end this exploitative industry.
