Speak Out to Protect Little Northeast Creek

Please join us for a public hearing being held Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. on a proposal to build an asphalt plant on the banks of Little Northeast Creek.

The applicant, Morton Trucking, has a history of environmental violations and has failed to be a good corporate neighbor. It is critically important that we speak out to stop this proposal. Please go to our web site at www.wonriverkeeper.org to read a flier detailing the potential health impacts, and for a letter I've sent to the Board of Adjustment, the Onslow County Health Director and elected officials.

Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League is currently producing a Toxic Air Pollution Model which will be presented at the hearing Tuesday night.

Additionally, the potential impacts to our surface waters are substantial.

Morton has already removed almost all of the wetlands between this proposed facility and Little Northeast Creek. Any sediment or polluted runoff from this facility will run directly into the creek.

The Zoning Adjustment Board is required to take public health and safety into account when approving a Special Use. We are asking the Board to request a full public health risk assessment from the State Environmental Toxicologist. If you would like to read Mr. Morton's application and the associated Staff Report, please email me and I'll be happy to send it to you.

Please consider coming to the hearing being held Tuesday, February 23 at 604 College St., Jacksonville, 6:30 p.m. and speaking out on behalf of Little Northeast Creek and the health of the community. If you can't attend, please write a short letter expressing your concerns and send it to me at tess@wonriverkeeper.org. We will present it on your behalf at the hearing.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to give me a call at 910-382-1370. Please forward this to your friends or post it to your status.

Yours,
Tess Sanders
