To support an autonomous initiative by the indigenous peoples of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, called PROGRAM TO SUPPORT THE HEART OF THE WORLD http://www.corazondelmundo.org.
The group of Friends of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta supports the autonomous initiative of the indigenous peoples of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, called PROGRAM TO SUPPORT THE HEART OF THE WORLD http://www.corazondelmundo.org. To this end, the Organización Indígena Gonawindua Tayrona represents the other three indigenous organizations of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta –Confederación Indígena Tayrona, Organización Wiwa Yugumaian Bunkwanarrúa Tayrona, and Organización Indígena Kankwama. The OGT is an indigenous-governed organization with special powers. It is governed by the public law and it has administrative autonomy. Its highest deciding body is the Comité Directivo, conformed by eight members and three Mamas (priests) of the Kogi, Wiwa, and Arhuaco ethnicities.
This strategy seeks the consolidation of the Red de Amigos de la Sierra (Network of Friends of the Sierra) who will make voluntary donations online. The scope of the Red is set for a period of 20 years, divided in 5-year blocks to measure results.
Donations will be collected in a special account through the Marion Institute http://www.marioninstitute.org –Programs-Serendipity Projects- Heart of the World. This also allows for the collection of tax-exempt, philantropic donations. The Marion Institute’s headquarters is located in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. For further information, please contact Desa Van Laarhoven by email at [email protected] or by phone at 508.748.0816.
Donations go to protecting the biological and cultural diversity of the SNMS, and seek to minimize the deterioration of ecosystems that increase global warming. They also contribute in a positive way that allows the Indigenous Authorities to exercise their autonomy and governance of their territory.
The main focus of investment is the purchase of lands from farmers. The new purchases will become part of INDIGENOUS RESERVATIONS –or territories of collective property.– As a result, they will be inalienable, not seizable, and imprescriptible.
The lands thus acquired will be treated in a special way that allows only 40% to be used for self-sustaining agriculture and 60% exclusively for the conservation of the biodiversity in situ.
Currently, The Nature Conservancy is collaborating with the indigenous organizations in the creation of a follow-up and evaluation strategy for the Program to Support the Heart of the World. This will allow us to scientifically demonstrate the benefits that a conservation strategy from our ancestral indigenous vision will provide to the world.
The indigenous organizations of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta own a GIS laboratory, as well as a database that allows us to identify priorities through specialized knowledge that is complementary to the indigenous people’s.
The Program to Support the Heart of the World is a management strategy with technical and financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Colombia, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington.
1. To protect the biological and cultural diversity of the SNSM.
