A new project of Modern Times Bookstore that aims to expand our events and reading series. Through partnerships with community organizations, schools, artists, and edu
While most of the Bay Area's independent bookstores have closed (several in just the last couple of years), Modern Times has been able to keep its doors open because of a strong community of supporters. However, like many of you and the organizations you are building, we are struggling to survive the economic crisis. To ensure Modern Times' future, we are developing a new project called the Tede Matthews Initiative, that we hope will further engage our communities.
In addition to supporting the bookstore, I invite you to join us in building the Tede Matthews Initiative. Tede Matthews was an early collective member, an anti-imperialist and gay rights activist, and the first person to bring events to Modern Times. The collective plans to carry on this vision by offering more author readings and panel discussions, as well as classes and community education programs.
This fall, the Tede Matthews Initiative will launch the School for the Study of Liberatory Social Movements. Led by several scholar activists who were active in the SFSU Student Strike, this "school" will be open to all community members who want to explore theories and strategies of radical social change, with a strong emphasis on class struggle, anti-authoritarianism, anti-racism, and feminism.
