Back to Help Find Michael Rust

Still Searching

A Colorado Springs family tells 11 News human remains found in Pueblo over the weekend are not those of their loved one.

Paul and Carl Rust spoke with an 11 News reporter Thursday morning. They told us they've accepted the fact that their brother is dead and are just looking for an answer.

They were hoping the remains were that of their missing brother, 56-year-old Mike Rust. But around 1 p.m. Thursday, they received a call from the family's private investigator saying the coroner had identified the human remains and they weren't Mike Rust.

Mike has been missing since March. He was last seen at his home in Saguache County, which is about 140 miles south east of Pueblo.

The Saguache County Sheriff's Office tells 11 News a bloody vest and part of a pistol were found not far from his home just days after he disappeared. DNA testing of the blood came back positive as being that of Mike Rust. Then in May, Mike's motorcycle was found about 25 miles from that crime scene. There was blood on that, too. However, the Saguache County Sheriff's Office is still waiting for those test results.

Family members tell 11 News there were two coincidences with the human remains in Pueblo. The coroner said the remains were an older adult male and had been in the ground for a few months.

The Saguache County Sheriff's Office is still looking for leads in this case. If you know anything about Mike Rusts' disappearance, you're asked to call Crimestoppers in the San Luis Valley at (719) 589-4111.

A $1,000 reward is being offered through Crime Stoppers and the family is offering $25,000.
