To spread awareness and raise money for autism
Q: WHAT IS ROCK THE BOAT FOR AUTISM '09?
A: We are going to row 17' Van Duyne Surf Boats from Boca Raton, FL (which is near Miami) to Wildwood, NJ. We will depart from Florida on Saturday, June 13, and plan to arrive in Wildwood, New Jersey on August 1, 2009. This will be 1500 miles of rowing! Insane! We will be raising money (ALL proceeds go to Autism Society of America) by receiving both sponsorship as well as private donations at our brand new website: rocktheboat.org! Check it out!
Q: WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
A: Autism is a brain development disorder that is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old. The number of people known to have autism has increased dramatically since the 1980s. There are several theories as to what causes Autism. However, there is no known cure and few children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood.
Autism not only affects those diagnosed, but also their families and friends. Autism tears apart families. Oprah, Jenny McCarthy and others report the divorce rate among families with a child who has autism in the family range from 80-90%. While the research currently being conducted on Autism is making progress, we are still many miles away from where we need to be. Hopefully, the generous donations that support our 1,500 mile journey will help narrow the gap between where we are now and where we need to be to find the cause, cure and more efficient treatments for Autism.
Q: WHEN ARE WE DOING IT?
A: We will depart from Boca Raton, FL on June 13, 2009. We plan to arrive in Wildwood, NJ on Saturday, August 1, 2009. But let us pray that this cause does not stop there! Between now and this June, we will be holding events, dinners, walks, etc that will also help Autism Society of America!
Q: HOW WILL WE FUNDRAISE TO PULL THIS OFF?
A: This is a definite thing. We are working with the Autism Society of America and their experienced staff, several universities to help us to fundraise, The US Coast Guard and State Police of all states we will be passing to help us with legalitiesl, and other organizations to see how we would go about planning something as big as this. So far, the support this fund raiser has received had far exceeded expectations.
OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE $250,000 FOR AUTISM SOCIETY OF AMERICA.
We propose that we will raise money for Autism Society of America by reaching out to local business in the tri-state area, national business that share our passion for helping the families of those affected by Autism, rowing clubs and other organizations that have an interest. In return for their donations or sponsorship, we will be thanking them for their support in every newspaper article or radio station interview, wearing t-shirts with their company logo on them, and placing flags/decals on the boats we row up the coast in. Finally, there will be a huge party on the beach of Wildwood the day we arrive, August 1, where we will be giving a big thanks to all those who helped make this dream become a reality! We are working on getting some name-brand musicians to come donate a performance and have appearances from some of the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles, and Soul.
While we have had so many people inquire about how they can help, and we are so thankful for all of your support, we can always use more help! And there are still many ways to help the cause: getting the word out there, raising Autism Awareness, and helping us get sponsored and raise money for this event are just a few ways to help!
