PLEASE CONTACT YOUR MP TODAY AND DEMAND THAT THEY SIGN THE EDM SANCTIONS AGAINST SRI LANKA!
Despite the official war in Sri Lanka having ended, major human rights violations are still being reported as over 280,000 Tamil civilians are being detained in Nazi-style camps in northern Sri Lanka.
They are living in overcrowded conditions, lack of food and water, inadequate medical facilities and poor sanitation. The camps are very basic and are surrounded by barbed wire, armed guards and resemble Nazi-style concentration camps.
There are reports of large scale human rights violations such as rape, torture, abductions and child recruitment by government backed paramilitaries.
Human Rights group Act Now hosted a Parliamentary meeting before the summer recess on July 21st, for MPs concerning the situation in Sri Lanka. During the meeting Act Now director Tim Martin demanded that the British government take action and requested that Jeremy Corbyn create an EDM calling for sanctions.
The EDM is now available for MPs to sign and ACT NOW is running a campaign to try to get over a hundred MPs to do so, to help assure that enough pressure is applied upon the relevant government ministers to turn it into Government policy.
SANCTIONS AGAINST SRI LANKACorbyn, Jeremy
That this House welcomes the work of Act Now and the British Tamil Forces in hosting a meeting in the House of Commons on 21 July 2009; notes the continual suffering of the Tamil people in camps and reports of depopulation of the east of the country; further welcomes the proposals of the meeting calling for the suspension of Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth in view of the human rights violations; calls on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to refuse development aid and loans; further calls on British-based and owned banks not to engage in activity with the government of Sri Lanka; and further calls upon the Government to take all possible diplomatic action to isolate the government of Sri Lanka in view of its abuse of human rights.
We need to keep the pressure on the British Government whilst MPs are on their 'holidays'. We need to get as many MPs as possible to sign this EDM 1970.
PLEASE TAKE TWO MINUTES AND CONTACT YOUR MP (details of how too below) AND REQUEST THEY SIGN (cut n' paste the letter underneath).

Dear ( name of your MP)
As your constituent I humbly request you take the necessary steps and sign the EDM 1970 SANCTIONS AGAINST SRI LANKA. The Sri Lankan government have clearly showed a complete disregard for human life with the killing of tens of thousands of innocent civilians earlier in the year and at least 20,000 thousand amputees. Now despite the official war in Sri Lanka being over, major human rights violations are still being reported as over 280, 000 Tamil civilians are being detained in Nazi-style camps in northern Sri Lanka.
They are living in overcrowded conditions, lack sufficient food and water, inadequate medical facilities and poor sanitation. The camps are very basic and are surrounded by barbed wire, armed guards and resemble Nazi-style concentration camps. There are report of large scale human rights violations such as rape, torture, abduction and child recruitment by government backed paramilitaries.
Aid agencies are not being given full access to all the areas as the government does not want them talking to all those who were witnesses to the atrocities inflicted by the government during the end of the war. Crucial organisations like the International Red Cross have been ordered to scale their operations. Media agencies are still barred except on specially guided military tours, for example with Ban-Ki-Moon on his visit.
The Sri Lankan government promised reconciliation and have had many chances, but clearly...
