Marking National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time setaside to raise awareness about the #1 cause of death by disease in children.
It comes fresh on the heels of a great accomplishment by you, our committed advocates, passage of the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, signed into law last month by President George W. Bush.
But we have so much more to accomplish. This month, CureSearch will launch a major initiative, the “Virtual Walk for 12,500” as well as a number of significant other events. I urge you to join us, as we redouble our efforts and carry our new momentum forward.

Celebrate September! Join the CureSearch “Virtual Walk for 12,500”
CureSearch is excited to announce a new initiative, the
“CureSearch Virtual Walk for 12,500” that will honor the 12,500 children in the United States who are diagnosed with cancer each year.
The Walk is an on-line effort to engage thousands of friends,
families, and advocates who agree to pledge at least $10 toward research on behalf each of these children, to support the research of the Children’s Oncology Group. In a “virtual” way, it follows the model of CureSearch’s signature MileStones Walk events. Since the “walk” is an on-line event, any person - anywhere - can participate!

Progress in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common malignancy of children, is one of the leading success stories in all of cancer research. Over the past 50 years, the survival rate has risen from about 15% to 80% overall. These dramatic breakthroughs are the sole and exclusive result of COG clinical trials.
The Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group’s Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Committee is Dr. William Carroll of New York University Medical Center.

Your many years of tireless work and relentless advocacy have paid off! On July 29th, in a ceremony held in the Oval Office President George W. Bush signed into law this milestone legislation that promises to significantly increase the federal investment into pediatric cancer research. CureSearch also salutes and thanks the legislative champions who helped to make this possible, including Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Norm Coleman (R-MN), and Representatives
Deborah Pryce (R-OH) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).
