Back to Repeal Prop 8

Judge Walker: Same-sex couples can wed Aug. 18!

It's a great day in California!

Today Judge Walker, the U.S. district court judge who recently heard the case against Proposition 8, denied a motion by the supporters of Prop. 8 for a stay to keep same-sex couples from marrying. Same-sex couples will be able to marry in California starting next Wednesday, August 18, at 5 pm, unless the supporters of Prop. 8 are able to get a higher court to issue a stay for them.

Judge Walker ruled Prop. 8 unconstitutional last week, largely due to the actions of our current Governor and Attorney General. Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Brown refused to defend Prop. 8 in court, and they asked Judge Walker's court to deny the stay.

Will our next Governor and Attorney General refuse to defend Prop. 8 in court? Whoever we elect will have a lot of power to shape future developments in the case. Gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown and Attorney General candidate Kamala Harris have pledged not to defend 8. But Meg Whitman and Steve Cooley have voiced support for the measure.

Equality California is calling on Whitman and Cooley to declare publicly that they will not defend Prop. 8 in court if elected. If they aren't willing to take a stand for equality, then we want them to know that we'll oppose them with our checkbooks, our volunteer time and our votes.

Please, join us! Sign the petition to tell Whitman and Cooley to stand against Prop. 8, and to stand for equality.

In solidarity,

Equality California (
