Back to Stop the Gateway Project

action tonight

Today, the first day of the Copenhagen Climate talks, a local group, including UBC professor Patrick Condon, will blockade a construction site in East Vancouver. The protest will be directed at the Gateway Program, a project that will increase greenhouse gases by over 170,000 tonnes per year in sector that is already the largest source of emissions in our region. The Gateway Program is part of a larger Pacific Gateway strategy that includes pipelines that connect to the Alberta Tar Sands, Canada's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. First Nations groups in Northern BC have expressed strong opposition to these plans.

Join us as we stage a "sit-in." There will be small business owners, publishers, farmers, grad students and church committees. We have people joining us from Vancouver, Delta, Surrey and even the Cariboo.

We'll be thrilled to have you join our group in whatever capacity suits you best. We need people to observe and support the action as well as participate.

Here are the details:
When: We will be meeting at 7:30 PM on Monday. You can stay as long as you like. Some people have committed to staying until midnight.
Where: We are meeting at Thunderbird Park at the intersection of Hwy 1 and 1st Ave in Vancouver. From there, we will soon proceed to the action site. If you can't find us or lose us, call 604.253.2127.

Getting there by bike: Thunderbird Park is half way between the Adanac and Central Valley Greenway bike routes. From Adanac take Rupert Street south to First and then head east. From CVG exit where the fence starts west of Highway one, cross Broadway and head north on Skeena Street.

Getting there by transit: Take Bus 27 (Rupert) to 1st and Rupert and then walk 3 blocks east. Or take Bus 28 to 1st and Boundary and then walk 3 blocks west. It is also about a 15 minute walk from the Rupert skytrain station.

Getting there by car: It is best to enter the park at 2nd Ave and Skeena Street. There should be street parking near this location.
