The Extraordinaries - Finalists in the WeMedia Pitch It 2009 Competition!

Today iFOCOS and WeMedia announce that The Extraordinaries are finalists in the We Media Pitch It 2009 Competition. Out of 356 entries from 48 countries, only eight projects were chosen to advance to the final round. The next leg of the competition takes place in Miami at the 2009 We Media Conference.

So, in the words of Will Smith, “We’re going to Miami!”

The Extraordinaries is crowdsourcing smartphone software that allows volunteers to perform tasks on their smartphones in just a few minutes. We allow anyone to do social good from any place on Earth within cell reception, and make the process feel like a game so that people regularly engage. We're talking about constructive use of spare time for science, medicine, nonprofits, government and more. Nearly anything you do on a regular computer you can do on a smartphone.

WeMedia is now the second competition in a month to invite us to the next round! The Extraordinaries is also a 2009 Echoing Green Semifinalist.

For Ben Rigby and myself, thank you.

Subject: Pitch It Finalist Announcement

Jacob -

I am pleased and excited to let you know that your idea, The Extraordinaries, has been named a finalist in the WeMedia Pitch It Competition. As a finalist, you are invited to present to a team of expert judges as well as the audience at We Media in Miami, February 24-26. If you are named the winner, we’ll help to make sure your idea becomes a reality.

The We Media Pitch It competition offers seed capital, international visibility, expert feedback and access to investors and other social entrepreneurs who want to launch new media and technology ventures. We’re focused on commercial and social entrepreneurs at their earliest stage - when they have a great idea and are looking to get going. Our goal with Pitch It is to make sure that truly innovative media and technology ideas can become a reality, and providing commercial and social entrepreneurs with the support they need, particularly at the earliest of stages, to help them do that.

Our model is to invest up to $25,000 to help you develop a business plan or other elements. We will give you exposure to a world-class group of business and technology experts, and the entire We Media community, to help you take the necessary next steps. Using the seed investment we provide and the network of experts we help to connect you with, you should be in a stronger position to take your idea to the next stage.

Over the next few weeks we will work with you to refine your idea and prepare your presentation, as well as help you identify and prepare to take advantage of all the resources available at WeMedia. We will ask you for more information, so we can prepare our judges. We want you to write up your idea and/or discuss it with the WeMedia community in advance of the conference later this month. And, we have a packed schedule of activities for you once you arrive in Miami.

Congratulations again, and let me know if you have any questions.
