Project AWARE Parade to celebrate International Year of the Reef 2008 and raise awareness for coral reef conservation

They basked in the beauty of pristine beaches and sparkling ocean waters. Enjoyed fireworks, free food, sampled drinks and danced to a live DJ. Then the fun and games continued with hovercraft races and bouts of “bumper fish”.

While this sounds like a dream vacation, this enchanting get away was the back drop enjoyed by Second Life populace and competitors at the Project AWARE Parade and float building contest celebrating International Year of the Reef 2008 on 28 June.

Second Life members displayed their creative talent and presented their reef themed floats on “Dive World” island, sharing their passion for aquatic conservation and raising awareness for coral reef conservation. The float taking first place in the contest was built by Seraina Benelli. Clearly the judge’s endorsement was won by the beautiful imagery of a diver gliding over a reef, exhibiting Baba Dioum’s renowned quote “In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught”.

LouRavi Karas’ provoking float took second place with its depiction a reef desecrated with waste, trailing an oil slick as it passed through the water.

Kersten McCallen’s aquarium and Reef Hotshot’s “Take only pictures, leave only bubbles” floats stumped the judges and tied for third place.
