Life Pieces To Celebrate 2009 Graduates On June 23, 2009

Washington, D.C. – On June 23rd, D.C. based Life Pieces To Masterpieces will host it’s
2009 Graduation Celebration from 6 PM until 8 PM at the 14th and V Street NW location
of Busboys and Poets.

Jim Vance of News Channel 4 will help the community-based-nonprofit celebrate
another year of beating the odds: In Washington D.C. only 30% of African American
young men graduate from high school. At Life Pieces To Masterpieces, 100% of their
young men graduate and go onto post-secondary education.

“We are so proud of our graduates and believe that they will be an inspiration to all who
attend our celebration,” said Mary Brown, Executive Director of Life Pieces To
Masterpieces.

The event will honor fifteen graduates, including the founding sister of Life Pieces,
Monique Johnson. Six of the graduates have been named Bill and Melinda Gates’
Achiever Scholars and have received $50,000 in scholarship support for their post-
secondary education plans.

Attendees can expect food, drink, artful expression, meaningful participation, and a true celebration
of what is working in some of Washington’s most underserved communities. The event
will be sponsored by Lamell McMorris and Perennial Sports and Entertainment.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Theresa Benjamin at 202-399-7703 or
emailing tbenjamin@lifepieces.org. “We invite members of the community, business
leaders, and longtime Life Pieces supporters to join us as we celebrate our young men
and their significant accomplishments,” said Brown.
