When I was last in India, my friend Sitara travelled from her village to visit me. Her story is both tragic and inspiring. Sitara lost both her legs, and was carried to the fields to clean outhouses every day. She begged for table scraps in her own home.
OEI gave her prosthetic limbs so she could walk again and provided her with handicrafts income generation training. She began to generate income, built her own toilet (!), and an extension onto her small house. Sitara saved money and bought chickens. She was elected to her village's governance council, and is now a decision maker and village leader. Sitara is living a transformed, independent life. THAT is the difference handicrafts can make in the life of a woman and a community.
I've set a goal of raising $2,000 to support the handicrafts program by June 1 via Facebook Causes. June 1 is my birthday. Instead of a birthday gift, will you consider donating an amount of your choosing to empower a woman like Sitara? Thank you for supporting my cause!
