We, the undersigned, petition the International Goat Days Festival in Millington, TN to stop hosting rodeo events.

Rodeos are violent events in which normally tame, docile animals are terrorized, tackled, choked, roped, knocked down, and wrestled. Many suffer broken bones and other major injuries. Some die from snapped necks and internal bleeding. Dr. C.G. Haber is a veterinarian who saw many animals discarded from rodeos and sold for slaughter. He described seeing animals "with 6-8 ribs broken from the spine, and at times puncturing the lungs." He saw animals with "as much as 2-3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin" from bruising.

Rodeos are not only harmful to animals, they are dangerous for the human participants. Children who participate in rodeos are at risk of broken bones and even death. What kind of lessons are children learning from the rodeo? Rodeos are nothing but silly displays of human domination over animals. Children are being taught that it is acceptable to abuse animals for fun.

Rodeos are already outlawed in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Many other European countries have strong restrictions on them. Some city governments in Massachusetts have created legislation that makes using animals in entertainment illegal. Forget the myth of rodeos as all-American sport. Modern rodeos are cruel and deadly for animals.

We insist that the International Goat Days Festival stops hosting such deplorable displays of animal cruelty. Rodeos are NOT a tradition that the general public wishes to see perpetuated.
