If we create more jobs and a more sustainable way of living in regional and rural areas, people will not have to move to major cities to find work. Then this will reduce urbanisation in these major cities which will reduce all the negative side effects that follow urbanisation.
Buying local produce will help support farmers and workers out in rural and local regions. Which means we will demand more stock from them and not over seas farms, and then our local farmers will not be forced to move to the city for work.
