Current New issue: Monsanto Maize application
Deadline: Thursday 12/06/14: (daff.gov.za)

OBJECTION TO TRIAL RELEASE OF EXPERIMENTAL GMOs IN SOUTH AFRICA;
Monsanto Maize application:

We recommend that the application in the Lowvelder (13 May 2014) for trial release of four unnamed GM maize varieties engineered for abiotic stress tolerance and maize borers be rejected. The signatories of this objection believe that GMO technology is neither appropriate nor safe. We recommend that government should support the shift to sustainable agroecology and strongly object to the use of GMOs in South Africa for the following reasons:

1.            Likelihood of Insect Resistance;

2.            Low Potential of Genetic Modification for complex traits;

3.            Risk of antibiotic resistant marker genes to humans and animals;

4.            High Potential for Infection and Allergies South Africa;

5.            Use of the word ‘improved’;

WE URGE YOU TO:
- Support independent, unbiased research on impact of GMOs and chemicals on Humans, Animals and Environment.
- Strictly apply the Precautionary Principle as per Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
- Educate the public on the RISKS of GMOs and agrochemicals.
- Revoke all approvals for commodity clearance and trial / general release of GMOs and declare a Moratorium on commercial release of GMOs.

- Support sustainable, agro-ecological, climate-smart strategies and reduce the impact of large commercial agriculture on our environment.

- Cooperate with Advertising Standards Authority to enforce our laws on misleading advertising.

- Support consumer preferences and enable production of gmo-free alternatives.

Please register our strong objection to all applications of GMOs, including these varieties from Monsanto.
