Goal

Tobacco companies should pay a percentage of their profits to the Australian health systems to pay for smoking related illness.

Why is it important

It is important for tobacco companies to give a percentage of their profits to the health systems, there are so many smoking related health illnesses. The profit margin for the 6 leading tobacco companies in 2010 was 35.1 Billion $US, a small percentage of their revenue would help pay for diseases that their product has caused.

Tobacco companies should pay a percentage of their profits to
the Australian health systems to pay for smoking related illness. Tobacco companies have such a huge turn over, even a small percentage will make a large contribution to the treatment of illnesses caused by tobacco.

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death. With every 1 in 5 passing’s being caused by tobacco. There are over 1 billion smokers worldwide with that number rapidly increasing. Tobacco companies are marketing discreetly to the adolescent age group. This will create a major problem for the health system in years to come. Teens are more likely to start smoking if a parent or family member currently smokes. If teens take up smoking their children in years to come, are likely to start smoking. There is a continual cycle which is forcing the health system in a tough situation.

If this trend continues economies will be crippled, as try to carry the cost of tobacco related illnesses. During the years 2000-2004 smoking was responsible for an estimated $193 billion in annual health related economic losses. It is illogical how tobacco companies have such huge profit margins and yet health systems are in such huge debts, because of their product. If tobacco companies were to give a percentage of their profits they may not advertise their product to society as, much which means there would be less tobacco manufactured. This means there will be fewer cigarettes being smoked, which will result in lower medical bills.

If tobacco companies give a percentage of their profits to the healthcare system it could put most 3rd world countries out of debt giving them the chance to develop and possibly fight poverty. It will create healthier people and minimise the amount of deaths caused by tobacco.
