Urge President Obama To Exonerate Marcus Garvey

I do not teach American Lit just from the perspective and timeline of the European presence. When I was planning my American Lit unit that includes "The Great Gatsby", I reviewed several professional teachers guides out of curiosity. Not one timeline included Marcus Garvey's presence! I discussed this deletion of history with our UMOJA group and a former AP US History student pointed out how less than a page about Marcus Garvey was in his text book. Yet his influence was so very widespread. His followers, though aged, span the Caribbean and beyond. We know how Kwame Nkrumah brought Garveyism to Ghana. Let's restore our exceptional Marcus Mosiah Garvey to the realm of history where his creations and philosophy belong.

Urge President Obama To Exonerate Marcus Garvey

Marcus Garvey was a man for not only his people but for all people. He knew that Africans cannot make a good impact on humanity again unless they first did internal work as a racial community. He never asked for handouts, instead he did what many Americans always claim we must do, "pulled himself [and others] up by his bootstraps." It is high time that Americans learn of this great man in the correct light and manner in which he lived his life. Help exonorate the Honorable Marcus "Mosiah" Garvey.
