Infant hydrocephalus is one of the most common abnormalities affecting the nervous system of children. Sometimes referred to as "water on the brain," infant hydrocephalus can exist at birth or be acquired. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal medical condition that develops when the normal flow and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain is hindered or blocked resulting in excessive accumulation of fluid in the ventricles of the brain. Left untreated, in addition to pain and suffering, infant hydrocephalus leads to significant brain damage, severe developmental delay, blindness, and ultimately death.
According to a research abstract done by CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, Mbale, Uganda in 2005,'Infection
is the most common cause of hydrocephalus in Uganda. In all children
older than 1 year of age and in those younger than 1 year of age with
PICH and aqueductal obstruction, which was reliably predicted by cranial
ultrasonography, ETV was effective'.
98% of Infants with hydrocephalus in Uganda die by the Age of Two due to lack of treatment. The poverty in Uganda is the core reason why the families of the affected children can not afford the treatment. On many occasions i meet mothers carrying their babies in advance stages of this abnormality on the streets begging for money to either feed the family at home or for finances for treatment. It is heart breaking as i see the mothers walk distances while covering the head of the child with a sheet to avoid attention some of which is shocking due to the extreme size of a little infant.I have seen the weight a mother carries when changing the position of her child and indeed it is heavy: so i think to myself,'then how heavy is this child's own head to his/her little body besides the physical limitations he/she is facing-poor eye sight, headaches, vomiting, drowsiness etc?'
In the entire Uganda, there is only 1 hospital in Mbale district called CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, Mbale, Uganda.under the Cure International Organization that helps treat patients with Hydrocephalus.
I also would love to head a campaign to raise funds for these beautiful children and create awareness to help prevent it.I would love to provide wheel chairs for the older children through the campaigns' funds because the children i see are always carried by their mothers with very little to no support for the movement of their heads. I would like for them to live normal happy lives,to sit upright, play and look at the beauty of the world like their age mates do to a certain degree.(THIS IS ONE OF MY MOTIVATIONS TO FULFILL THIS CAUSE .)
Infants with Hydrocephalus are part of me and i believe that they have more than just a chance to experience a normal happy pain free life if you can sign a petition. I am grateful.
