Support the cause of Palestine. "Why Palestine? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights". Edward Said

The photo representing the cause belongs to my grandmother Labibeh Nassar Habash (born in Jaffa Palestine 21st March 1924).

The photo was taken in Amman, Jordan just after my grandparents fled with their family from Jaffa to Jordan in 1948. She was 24 years old and just lost her home and means of livelihood and became a refugee. All she had was her house key, believing it was a matter of days and she will be back. She gave me the photo in 2003 after she narrated her Palestine's Nakba story so I can write it for her. She died in 2005 knowing that I will pass on her story.

Since 2003 I have been too busy with my life to write her story (marriage, baby, business!!). But 2 years ago I stumbled upon a quote by the late Edward Said: "Why Palestine? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights".

Up until I read his quote, I was a Palestinian spectator (not a player). For most Palestinians now especially in the diaspora, thinking about what's happening in Palestine makes them feel defeated. The pain of losing Palestine is too much to bear. The only way for them to deal with the pain is by switching off and pretending that everything is ok, while they walk around numbing themselves to the pain by burying it down. In the process, they are losing their sense of identity and connection to their sense of justice and equality. The numbness is making us disconnect from what it means to be alive. Losing hope leads to losing our ability to survive. Without hope there can be no solution, no creativity and certainly no future.

What kind of future do we see? The future should be better than the past and the present. Because life is about evolution and growth. So the next moment should be better than the one before it. Which brings me to Edward Said's quote: "The future should be about equality and human rights". That should be our objective.
