is gathering 10 pledges to
Honor Dr. Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela
Yesterday we learned of the passing of the great Nelson Mandela. He was a man of great conviction and courage. Spending 27 years imprisoned for what he knew should be an inaliable right, and that is freedom for the masses in his country. The minority (the white population of South Africa), considered him a TERRORIST to their racist and controlling government.
South Africa is a country blessed with an abundance of natural resources including fertile farmlands and unique mineral resources. South African mines are world leaders in the production of diamonds and gold as well as strategic metals such as platinum. The climate is mild, reportedly resembling the San Francisco bay area weather more than anywhere in the world. Yet the people did not share in the wealth of their own country.
Much like slavery in this country. The ruling body of government, The National Party, drew a racial line. The were WHITE ONLY jobs, water fountains, rest rooms etc. All blacks were required to carry ``pass books'' containing fingerprints, photo and information on access to non-black areas. This was under the laws of Apartheid.
Nelson Mandela fought Apartheid and was sentenced to life for his conviction. When he entered prison he went unwavering to his beliefs, accepting his fate of incarceration till death. However, he was freed! He had made the Long Walk to Freedom. Read THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM and get it into our classrooms as well. This man must be remembered. TAKE THE PLEDGE.
