Angelina Jolie found out that she had a faulty gene called BRCA1 that drastically increased her risk of breast and ovarian cancer. "Drastically" is the word: she discovered that she had an 87% chance of getting breast cancer and decided to have a double mastectomy.
Jolie published an op-ed in the New York Times today about her decision and her experience. It's the first step of her efforts to open up a dialogue about cancer risk and making sure that women know their options.
