Instead of ending the FCS education program, the University of Akron should recognize from their own students the increased need for FCS education and work to grow the program. College students are graduating with great debt and little understanding of what that means for the their future and no one at home seems well equipped to guide students to appropriate financial decisions. As a nation we are already experiencing the painful cost of a society with little ability to make wise decisions about money or food choices. Family and Consumer Sciences has the potential to help individuals improve personal and family life and surely that is equally as important as the emphasis on the Common Core or STEM education. I encourage UA officials to consider the costs of not providing FCS education for future generations. Perhaps the better choice is to lead the way in Ohio for growth of FCS education programs.

My answer is simple, every 8th grader in America should be taking a FACS Class! If we are so Career minded, then what better way to make at least 10 careers available to young people. In 2013 it is so sad to have a student come up to you and say "Thank You for your class and letting me cook, my mother doesn't let me in the kitchen". We all have stories, Gee, maybe we should flood the "decision makers" with all our stories! Maybe then someone would understand the Need.
