Haiti unfortunately, because of our country's natural environment, and lack of resources, wood became and continues to be the principle energy source. From 1940 until current day Haiti's natural resources have dissipated. Deforestation is a severe environmental problem and as of 2006 less than 2% of Haiti's land remained forested. The tremendous demand for charcoal increased soil erosion and further aggravates deforestation. As a result, we are the most deforested country in the Western Hemisphere, and alarmingly, in the world. Numerous studies have illustrated that poverty and hunger are directly related to this environmental degradation
