Save Orangutans: Cut Conflict Palm Oil, Not Rainforests

https://www.causes.com/v2actions/1760194-a-petition-to-the-snack-food-20 Please sign the above petition to save Orangutans. Currently these beautiful animals are severely endangered by destruction of their rainforest habitat for the production of palm oil, used in food production. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. Oil palms can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. Today, almost all palm oil is produced in, and exported from, Indonesia and Malaysia, where vast areas of pristine rainforest is slashed and burned each year in order to make way for oil palm plantations. Many orangutans and other wildlife are killed in the process, so that this one vegetable oil can be used in many of our everyday foods and products. This large-scale deforestation is pushing orangutans to extinction, along with many other native species of Borneo and Sumatra. Palm oil is an extremely popular vegetable oil for food manufacturers. It is used in over 50% of products, including: baked goods, confectionery, cosmetics, body products and cleaning agents. Companies know it is very contentious so they usually hide palm oil under the name of 'vegetable oil', or over 170 other names! 30 years ago palm oil wasn't used as much as it is today, in fact, it was almost non-existent in much of the Western world. We don't need palm oil. There a many alternatives, but unfortunately none as cheap, which is why companies are reluctant to switch. What about 'sustainable palm oil'. Currently, this 'eco-friendly' vegetable oil is sourced through RSPO, an organisation which is considered unreliable and untrustworthy by many. Because palm oil isn't labelled in many countries, consumers don't know that many of the products they buy contribute to this unprecedented disaster. Orangutan numbers are plummeting - often they are killed or badly injured when their forest home is slashed and burned to make way for a palm oil plantation. These exquisite animals and many other rainforest creatures are dying in agony, all for our sugary, prepackaged snack foods and fragrant, chemical-filled soaps and shampoos. And on top of this, Palm oil is very high in cholesterol so it can have really harmful effects on our health too.

All I see is greed. Everything is about how much money can be made, about how little effort is required to achieve this financial gain, and that it does not matter who or what they crush or destroy in their path to that financial gain. Our world is being destroyed unnecessarily by corporations and governments who do not care. We have a voice and collectively our voices can make a difference.

Indonesia has one of the highest populations in the world with the scarcest land base. If the West continues to use palm oil in processed food (which we're not even conscious of) the Indonesians are encouraged to clear more land for growing it. Housing is already taking up land rapidly. Orangutans and plenty of other forest animals and plants should be protected at all costs, so lets vow we know all the ingredients in everything we buy!

Please sign this petition to tell Mars to turn its new commitments into a global palm oil policy and take action to cut Conflict Palm Oil from its products immediately. Unlike some of its fellow Snack Food 20 companies, like Kraft and Smucker's, Mars is on the move. We have a chance to push Mars, the maker of wildly popular brands like M&Ms, Snickers, and Combos, to become an industry leader in sourcing responsible palm oil. PLEASE .... Orangutan's need YOU ... A copy of the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) report 'Conflict Palm Oil: How US Snack Food Brands are Contributing to Orangutan Extinction, Climate Change and Human Rights Violations' was given and outlined RAN's demand to cut Conflict Palm Oil. We're confident the company is getting the message. But Mars won't change unless it hears from enough of us that we expect it to cut Conflict Palm Oil from its products. __________ A message from the leader Rainforest Action Network A petition to The Snack Food 20 Today RAN's Palm Oil Action Team visited the corporate headquarters of Mars, Inc. with Strawberry, an orphaned orangutan from Indonesia, to let the company know that consumers all across the world want Mars to stop using Conflict Palm Oil in its products. Mars and all of the Snack Food 20 companies need to hear from you too!
