Almost half of preschoolers in Guatemala suffer from malnutrition. This can both hurt their daily performance in school and affect them for the rest of their lives. Children with malnutrition are more likely to drop out of school, losing the opportunity to learn important skills for later on in life. Malnutrition early in life can also have serious effects on the mind and body later on.
Mayan Families, a non-profit organization based in San Diego, has established seven Preschool Nutritional Centers in rural Guatemalan communities to combat this problem. At these centers, children are provided with the most basic of necessities, including a quality education, a nutritional meal every day, and lessons in hygiene.
No child should have to lose their childhood because their family cannot pay for it. We take it for granted here in America that childhood is carefree and full of learning and play, but for thousands of children around the world, this is not the case.
