"We cannot despair of humanity, since we ourselves are human beings."  - Albert Einstein

Almost half of preschoolers in Guatemala suffer from malnutrition. This can both hurt their daily performance in school and affect them for the rest of their lives. Children with malnutrition are more likely to drop out of school, losing the opportunity to learn important skills for later on in life. Malnutrition early in life can also have serious effects on the mind and body later on.

Mayan Families, a non-profit organization based in San Diego, has established seven Preschool Nutritional Centers in rural Guatemalan communities to combat this problem. At these centers, children are provided with the most basic of necessities, including a quality education, a nutritional meal every day, and lessons in hygiene.

No child should have to lose their childhood because their family cannot pay for it. We take it for granted here in America that childhood is carefree and full of learning and play, but for thousands of children around the world, this is not the case. Whether it is growing up in extreme poverty with little hope for overcoming it, suffering illnesses without proper medical care, or going hungry day after day, children are suffering.

For only $190 a year, you can sponsor a child through Mayan Families. Your sponsorship helps provide these children with:

  • a quality school education
  • shoes and clothes several times a year
  • nutritious meals
  • a multi-vitamin every day
  • medical and dental care
  • lessons in learning to brush their teeth daily
  • basic hygiene training
The East High School chapter of Spanish National Honor Society has already dedicated itself to this cause. In the summer of 2012, a group of students visited the children in Guatemala. Though we have helped sponsor a few children, we cannot even begin to help the over 350 children that currently rely on the nutritional centers. If sponsors are not found for these children, they may no longer be able to receive a good education and, even worse, may not be able to eat a nutritious meal every day.

As part of Causes.com, we would appreciate any donations, no matter how big or how small. Causes has raised millions for various organizations, and we are glad to have the opportunity to be part of our shared humanity.
