It has been predicted that if overfishing continues at current rate by 2050 all seafood will run out. Overfishing is a serious issue and is a form of  overexploitation where fish stocks are reduced to below acceptable levels. Overfishing can occur in water bodies of any sizes, such as ponds, rivers, lakes or oceans. I want to stop supertrawlers overfishing in the ocean. My campaign is important because overfishing due to supertrawlers is depleting our oceans of fish stocks. Bycatch refers to all the forms of marine life caught unintentionally while catching other fish. Bycatch can include the wrong size of the target species, other species that are not eaten or for which there is no market and banned or endangered species such as certain birds, turtles and marine mammals. Some fish are discarded because the fishing boat is not licensed to bring them to land, because there is no space on the boat or because the captain has decided not to catch that species. The great proportion of bycatch, millions of tons each year, is thrown back into the sea dead or wounded.

Worldwide, fishing fleets are two to three times as large as needed to take present day catches of fish and other marine species and as what our oceans can sustainably support. On a global scale we have enough fishing capacity to cover at least four Earth like planets. In addition many fishing methods are unsustainable in their own way. These methods have a large impact on the basic functioning of our marine ecosystems. These unselective fishing practices and gear cause tremendous destruction on non-target species. Bycatch and bottom trawling are two examples of this.

Some of today’s fishing practices are wasteful. As the methods they are using are unsustainably because the more fish they get the more money they get from the stocks. Some of these practices are Bottom Trawling ghost fishing, Bottom Trawling is one of the most harmful techniques. It is an industrial method which uses enormous nets weighed down with heavy ballasts which are dragged along the sea floor, raking up or crushing everything in its path, from fish to ancient coral. Ghost fishing is the result of nets and other fishing materials that are accidentally or intentionally abandoned in the sea. These nets continue to senselessly trap fish and shellfish and even large fish, which die of exhaustion or suffocation after struggling to get to the surface to breathe. These practices used to catch the fish are destroying the ocean and the ecosystems.

The methods used are damaging the ocean and
its ecosystems. The methods being used such as bottom trawling, explosions and another method is Bycatch are killing the ecosystem. The problem with bottom trawling is that it is an unselective method and is severely damaging to seafloor ecosystems. Many creatures end up mistakenly caught and thrown overboard dead or dying, including endangered fish and vulnerable deep-sea corals that can live for hundreds of years or more. This collateral damage, called bycatch, can amount to 90% of a trawl’s total catch. In addition, the weight and width of a bottom trawl can destroy large areas of seafloor habitats that give marine species food and shelter. Such habitat destructions can leave the marine ecosystem permanently damaged. This methods are making species face extinction sooner than scientist expected.

Species, including apex predators, are facing extinction sooner than expected. This are facing extinction sooner than expected because super trawlers are catching species they don’t need to catch because of the practices they are using. Another reason why this species are facing extinction sooner than expected of the shrimp trawlers throw away 80 – 90 % of their catch over board which is called bycatch.

In conclusion if the ways of fishing don’t charge by 2025 the fishing interest will be no more because the scientist predict in 2061 the ocean will be fished out.
