Today, there are 2.4 million people in American prisons. The numbers have grown by 500% in the past 30 years. Although the U.S. has only 5% of the world's population, it has 25% of the world's total prisoners. In 2015, one in every 108 adults was in prison or in jail, and in 28 children in the U.S., one had a parent behind bars.
