This resolution would reaffirm America’s commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), encourage the 28 other NATO allies to fulfill their commitments to spend 2% of GDP on defense, and finance training & equipment needed to achieve interoperability within the alliance. It’d also recognize the 7 other NATO allies aside from the U.S. that are meeting their defense spending commitments: the United Kingdom, Poland, Estonia, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia. In 2014, NATO members declared that all allies currently failing to do so will work toward meeting their defense spending commitments by 2024.
As a concurrent resolution, this legislation would advance to the House if passed by the Senate to serve as a non-binding statement by Congress on the issue of NATO defense spending commitments.
