senate Bill S. Res. 385

Congratulating NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly on His One-Year Space Mission

Argument in favor

Astronaut Scott Kelly’s successful one-year space mission is a remarkable achievement for him personally and for NASA that merits congratulations from the Senate.

It's quick and cheap, so there is little reason not to. Also, it celebrates an achievement in STEM that we need to emphasize because it will draw more people into this fascinating field, which is far more important for the senate to do than try to repeal the affordable care act again after over 60 unsuccessful attempts. We need to put more emphasis on STEM and bringing this country together - congratulating Scott Kelly would do both.

Argument opposed

While Scott Kelly and NASA both deserve recognition for their accomplishment, the Senate doesn’t need to go on record applauding them with a formal resolution.

I don't think we should celebrate aliens entering our country under any circumstance. Send him back!

There are more important things the senate should be doing. Not taking away from the achievement at all though, I'm a huge advocate for further space travels.

Let's focus on things pertinent to the state of our nation.

This needed to be legislation???? A few congressman couldn't call a press conference and say "Good Job"? Do they propose bills on what's going to be for lunch? The least productive Congress in US history, good job congress!

I think he is remarkable & has served the country admirably but this is NOT the stuff of legislation. He can be adequately honored without wasting staff time & tax payers money!

While this a remarkable feat, it's not something that congress needs to waste their time on. We all do our jobs with little or no recognition.

Space exploration is humanity's future. We need to celebrate all of our brave astronauts. Our officials acknowledging such accomplishments can be great for raising public awareness about space exploration and technologies.

A tenth of a penny. That's what the average tax payer gives NASA each year. (Paraphrased from Neil deGrasse Tyson.) It's not a waste of money. Space travel has resulted in many bi-products that have benefited society. No, congress shouldn't NEED to congratulate Kelly, but his work, and the work of all those behind him are for the betterment of mankind, and I think it's worth the 20 seconds it would take to say "good job!"

He did his job. It's a great thing he did, but it was his job. No one else gets such recognition for doing their job, so Congress should just try doing theirs and stop trying to shift people's focus away from their frankly criminal apathy and neglect of their duties.

While what he accomplished was commendable, there are issues more important than this. This is a waste of time and taxpayer dollars.

The Senate needs to get off their collective asses, do the job they were elected to do, and faithfully represent the people who elected them.

Seems like a waste if you ask me. All Kelly did was take a year-long off-world vacation.

How about acknowledging ALL the VETS who have multiple tours, 3, 4, or 5 times to the Middle East? Especially those returning injured or suffering from PTSD. SHAME ON OUR LEADERSHIP.

The time spent on this bill and acknowledging only one of thousands of people (or more) with extraordinary accomplishments takes the necessary time needed by our Senators to review and act on truly needed legislation.
