senate Bill S. Res. 307

Designating November 2015 as Native American Heritage Month

Argument in favor

There are several months dedicated to honoring Americans of various backgrounds, and Congress should continue the tradition of honoring Native American culture during November.

If anyone deserves a month, it's them. We have black history month, it's time we honored the native holders of this land. We greatly undervalue their culture.

I'm not certain this helps but to not recognize Native people is unthinkable!

Recognizing the culture and tragedy of Native Americans is the absolute least we can do for the people whose land we currently occupy. Much more can and should be done (state-by-state ideally) but this is a good first step.

Argument opposed

It doesn’t seem as if the public adequately honors the history of whatever culture is being honored with a heritage month, so Congress should stop designating them altogether.

We are all supposed to be American, not divided into multiple sub groups. It is up to families to keep different ancestral heritages being passed down

And ignore them the other 11 months? Why select specific U.S. citizens for special months at all? Doing so is inherently divisive and racist.

Many ethnicities have a month dedicated to their cultures and traditions, and Native Americans deserve a month also.

We can never repay the native owners of our land, all discussions aside, tehy are at the very lrast due recogniyion by the way of these honors. What we did hundreds of years ago was in the manner of typical human aggression and is unforgivable. They are now citizens which is a gift worthy of some recognition in today's even more aggressive world.

Out of all the minority's in the United States , it is my belief the American Indian , has been forgotten for the most part. I worked in the four corners are a few years back. Seeing the reality of some of people was astounding. In the day and age in which we live, it is a shame to have people who don't even have running water or indoor plumbing in their homes. I have seen this first hand, this was just one example of how we didn't deliver on promises to minority's our country hasn't kept. The Indians deserve to have some recognition, who knows it could help restore some dignity to a deserving and noble people.

Under Title 36 there are only 2 cultures federally recognized as a whole, Hispanics and Asia-Pacific. The original inhabitants of this land absolutely deserve to be added to that list in November as well as African-Americans in February.

Why not. These are the original owners of this land. It's the least we could do for what we did to them.

We need to honor their contributions and highlight this marginalized group that is seemingly willfully ignored in our culture.
