senate Bill S. Res. 176

Should the Senate Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Jerusalem’s Reunification?

Argument in favor

This bipartisan bill is a simple way of reiterating U.S. policy on the status of Jerusalem while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the city’s reunification following the Six Day War.

Under Jordanian control, Jews were not permitted to approach the sacred site of the Temple. Ancient burial sites were vandalized, synagogues destroyed. Under Israeli control all faiths are able to pray in the old city and maintain their religious sites. Jerusalem must never be divided again.

Sure why not, but since you're in the office, could you lower our taxes or strengthen border protection? If you have a list, start with hard items first, then move to the simple Yeas or Nays.

Argument opposed

This resolution doesn’t really do much aside from restate U.S. policy on Jerusalem. The Senate shouldn’t spend the few minutes it’ll take to pass this resolution.

We should not be commemorating anything for a country that is still allowed to occupy another and run it as an apartheid state.

Anyone who knows their history realizes that the Six Days War carries a lot of baggage. To oversimplify, what was a reunification of one group was the separation of another. And considering the negative impact 50 years has had on both the oppressors AND the oppressed, this piece of history clearly needs to be considered from multiple perspectives. Our support of the state of Israel and the Jewish people and our care and concern for the Palestinian people should not be mutually exclusive.

This bill doesn't actually do anything. Our public servants need to stop wasting time and money on empty gestures when there's so much to do.

With due respect to Israel, if we're going to isolate, we need to be consistent and allow all foreign nation to look to themselves for celebrations and commemorations. What is the purpose of our observing this anniversary. The Senate and congress are better focused on the several domestic issues now facing us.

Jerusalem is a pivotal point for so many issues and religions that Trump's involvement will display his magnificence in its full glory. Celebrating the unification of a city that is not unified in fact but by force is a hollow objective. But this just might be the celebration that the Trump Administration is drawn to, one that emphasizes the stark divisions in the population and leaves them more at odds once he moves on to disrupt something else. Save the money to clean up some disaster that I'm sure he won't be diverted from in the future!

I guess we are supposed to forget about the war crimes against Palestinian women and children because propping up Israel is the status quo. This is an empty gesture shoved down the throats of the non-religious in this country, whom have ZERO representation in Congress.

Yeah, but this is not why the majority was elected. You were given a mandate to fix what you've broken. Taxes, lower. Regulations, less. Spending, cut! Obamacare, repealed. Illegals, deported. Welfare, slashed. But, if you're too busy recognizing Jerusalem, hurry up.

As soon as I saw the sponsor of this bill, the decision was made for me. Far from being anti-any religious group, I believe in respect for all religious groups. Tragically, the saga of Israel and Palestine is ongoing, and brutally bloody. I don't see a whole lot to celebrate. Let's hold off on glorifying this until peace comes between both peoples. As has been said by others, this is a bill full of fluff which accomplishes nothing. Please spend our tax dollars creating good for our own painfully divided and troubled nation. I say NAY to this bill.

Jerusalem is the historical and rightful Capitol of Israel period! To include the right to rebuild the temple on the Temple Mount! Anyone who does not agree with that to me is clearly anti Semitic and most likely a halo cause denier as well! I urge the president to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel ft Tel Aviv to Jerusalem!

Whether we believe Jerusalem belongs solely to Israel, should be split or have the Holy City be administered by a third party, it is not for us to decide. This would pre-judge a settlement and harm peace prospects.

Our Nation's message to the Middle East is being lost in light of recent announcements from the White House. This shows good faith to those who are concerned that the United States doesn't have any.

Omfg that comment from James though. "Jerusalem is the historical and rightful Capitol of Israel period! To include the right to rebuild the temple on the Temple Mount! Yes hello my support of two states makes me a "halo cause" denier lol
