senate Bill S. Joint Res. 8

Should Congress Cut New Rules That Make It Easier For Employees To Hold Union Elections?

Argument in favor

The new rule threatens American businesses by undermining the fair and timely process for union elections. Sure elections will be speedier, but at the cost of important due process and free speech rights.

I work for a union company and so grateful for the representation that I have. They protect me from a company that thinks they can take advantage of their works. I work hard and believe in a fair days pay for a fair days work. But I also work with some people that the union protects that take advantage of their representation.

If union positions truly represented the will and values of their members this law would be unnecessary. As a Catholic, I am proud of the role the Church played in the creation of trade unions in this country. Yet, as a Catholic, I cringe every time the unions become reliable mouthpieces of Democrat social engineering and anti-Life legislation. Therefore, I support this bill and expect that it will assist unions to return to their original purposes of protecting workers' rights. I support this legislation.

Workers should be able to make a considered opinion about forming or joining a union, and cutting the timeline for elections to 11 days favors unions at the expense of employers and individual workers.

Argument opposed

The new rules are on the side of the American worker — making the union election process more transparent, speedy, and accessible. It was a necessary reform for creating a uniform process across regions that should be left in place.

We should be protecting Unions, not dismantling them. Unions have made this country great.

Let's see if I understand this: A yea vote means that the time limit would be shorter, and a nay vote means let's allow the entire 38 days for a union election. So, what's the rush? Why not allow time to debate the issue and get the information and election materials to the workers?

Unions are the reason we aren't being exploited by big business now. If the need a few more days to hold elections, so be it.

People that support unions are mistakenly voting Yea. Yea is the WRONG vote if you support unions and their new rule to have time to vote! Yea says you agree with congress to cut the unions new rule that gives employees 38 days down to a measly 11, so business can easier dump on its employees! Nay is the RIGHT vote if you are like me and support unions and the living wage and conditions they have brought to the American Worker!

Poor and middle income wage earners need to be nurtured to make them viable. I have been against unions most of my life but now feel victimized by rampant capitalism, income, and tax inequity. unions are one way to help to make the poor and middle classes viable.

If the question was simply worded 'should workers be given more protections in organizing and electing union leaders' all the responses I read would have been 'yes', clearly there is an agenda behind the wording of these questions, which is a good representation of why the Republican approach to public opinion is obfuscation and restriction.

Nay! Unions built workers' rights in this country. If it hurts people who want to unionize, it's a bad idea!

Unions should not have an advantage over other organization. The government should not be the deciding factor for citizens of America. Let the unions do there own work.

Having been in the work force for over 30 years, I know 11 days isn't time enough to prepare for or facilitate this process

Unions are essential for ensuring that workers get the treatment that they deserve. These rules will cut down on the things for which unions are maligned—bureaucracy, exclusivity, secrecy. There's no reason to take them away.

Transparency is the critical issue here. All should be able to clearly understand what changes and additions truly mean without signing off on a contract few may truly understand.

Unions were important back in the industrial revolution. They are not today.

This will help bring jobs back to America. Also stop illegal immigration and change trade laws with China, so they don't get all our old jobs, our R&D and technology.

If it weren't for the unions, we wouldn't have 40 hour work weeks. paid sick leave, week-ends, FMLA, safe working conditions...everything ALEC/Koch roaches are against.
