Should Congress Block the Coproduction & Sale of Laser Guidance Systems for Bombs to Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia has strained its alliance with the U.S. through its indiscriminate bombing campaign in Yemen, its murder of Jamal Khashoggi, and its repression of human rights domestically. Blocking this and other arms sales will send a message to Saudi Arabia to change its behavior.

Absolutely. Saudi Arabia is the number one exporter of Islamic extremism, terrorist funding and 19 of the 20 9/11 attackers were Saudi. No way we should be selling them weapons.

I don’t know how to be much clearer. The US should not sell BB guns or bottle rockets to the Saudis. They are not our Allies. They are terrorists. They financed 911. They are directly responsible for the torture and murder of an American journalist, they are helping to destabilize the Middle East and are responsible for atrocities in Yemen using our weapons. They have horrific a human rights record. Sell them nothing. And thank you for this bipartisan resolution.

Saudi Arabia is a key U.S. ally in bringing stability to the Middle East, and while there are obvious tensions and challenges in that alliance that need resolution this bill would unwisely undermine Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities at a time of heightened aggression from Iran.

We have to pick one ally in the Middle East besides Israel to keep some semblance of peace/deterrence/equilibrium or we are in huge trouble. If we don't sell them arms, they will buy them from Russia or China. I don't really trust them either, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

not sure this is showing up right. I vote yes but misread the question and I seem to be having trouble correcting this. There are 2 issues here. First, giving design information on our laser guidance systems and manufacturing technology to any other country is a big security risk, especially if that country is not a long established ally with common world views. This I emphatically oppose. Today's expedient decisions often have unexpected long term consequences. Second, the sale of laser guided munitions may be warranted if the US continues its sledge-hammer diplomacy with Iran and forces a larger scale confrontation. An armed alliance with a country, even one ideologically opposed to American values, could help protect our service men and women who have been put into the middle of escalating military tension- even though that tension has been created primarily by our presidents "art of the deal".

I stand strongly opposed to this S.J. Res. 36 resolution which would prohibit the coproduction and manufacture of guidance systems for Paveway laser-guided bombs in Saudi Arabia in collaboration with Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom under authority granted to Congress by the Arms Export Control Act.
It would also prohibit the transfer of up to 64,403 additional kits, partial kits, and full-up-rounds.

Saudi Arabia is NOT our friend. They have been helping enemy states and organizations for decades. The chances more of our arms will fall into the hands of those who will actively use them agaist us is huge.
