Should It Be Illegal For Employers To Fire Their Workers For Discussing Wages?

Argument in favor

Employers should foster transparency in the workplace — if they have nothing to hide, then discussing wages shouldn't be a problem. And because unequal pay is more often than not a gendered issue — there should be no barriers to achieving equal pay for equal work.

Generally speaking, the anti-Union is the only group that wants this to be illegal. Those who oppose Unions tend to pay unfair wages while major profits are kept for the senior elite. Firing an individual because he or she wants to be treated fairly is preposterous because most cannot afford to buy fair treatment.

If and employer can fire on the grounds of discussing wages, it just gives more power to big businesses, and less power to unions. Many people are underpaid and without this law they will be continued to be underpaid.

Argument opposed

Employers base wages on many factors, like merit, seniority, and experience — things that other employees might not be privy to, and that have nothing to do with gender. Making wage information readily available could lead to misunderstandings and false accusations.

Government involvement in labor contracts continues to harm and inhibit the very groups they attempt to assist. Employers hire people because they think they will benefit from doing so; they're not sitting there looking for any excuse to turn around and fire them.

    Allowing workers to freely exchange their pay rates will prevent discrimination between sexes and races by employers. Not only that, but no one should fear termination from something so mundane as discussing pay rate.

    I believe if you preform your occupation productively and are presentable/responsible employee then you earn an increase in your wage and you should be respected with more occupational and finical opportunities. However, if you are a Irresponsible employee and you are not productive due to your lack of effort then you do not deserve a raise and considerably should be fired as well. My point being is, YOU DO YOUR JOB GREAT GREAT THINGS HAPPEN BACK TO YOU, IF YOU DONT DO YOUR JOB WELL YOU DONT DESERVE AN INCREASE WAGE AND MAY BE FIRED AS WELL!

    It shouldn't be illegal to fire your employees for any reason. It's a contract, and it can be terminated for any reason.

    The rich only get richer. Workers (should) have the freedom of discussing pay with their employers. By avoiding the conversation, the employees are getting trapped in possibly less than minimum wage.

    A company should be able to hire or fire anyone they want for any reason they want. If their reasons are unpalatable to their customers then the customers should go elsewhere. This will force the company to change or go out of business. That is how capitalism works.
