senate Bill S. 799

Would More Research Help Prevent Opioid Abuse by Pregnant Mothers?

Argument in favor

As heroin and other opioids have become more widely available, the prevalence of abuse by pregnant mothers has increased — tragically harming their unborn child. Increased research would allow for a better-informed strategy to combat this growing threat.

If it is true that one baby every hour is born with a narcotics dependency, then something needs to be done. This bill seems like a good first step.

Opiate dependency amongst not just pregnant woman is at the highest rate ever. I see it everyday in the ER. Everyone wants a never ending supply of Percocet it seems and we have pregnant woman coming in daily and asking for Morphine for normal pregnancy related discomfort. Life sucks, get a helmet.

Pay attention: this is not rocket science (or climate change which you admittedly know nothing about!) First, fully fund all aspects of women's healthcare (including all forms of contraception), then raise the minimum wage & address the issue of affordable housing, mandate maternal & family leave, and provide for affordable & readily available childcare & early childhood education. I know this concept has escaped you but, if you stack the deck against everything essential for women to raise their children, you no longer have the option of being shocked when pregnant women who are trapped in poverty with no hope of providing a decent life their child use drugs. GET A LIFE! Go home to your deeply held family values wife & kids and talk to your wife! Every American woman, with the exception of those born into privilege, know these things. You don't know them because you don't think we are valuable enough to bother finding out what is important to our lives.

Argument opposed

The sad truth of this situation is that there will always be drug abuse that negatively impacts the health of mothers and their unborn or infant children. It is unrealistic to think that the government will eliminate it, so those efforts should be left to private groups.

How could mothers not know that opioid abuse is harmful to their fetus? We don't need more research to prove what everyone already knows. What we need is more individual responsibility.

Research will not stop drug use. These women know the risk. There's been education, prohibition of drugs, limiting prescriptions by doctors, checks by pharmacies - and we still have opiod drug addiction! No. Maybe mandatory birth control

More research would, after millions of dollars are spent reveal drug users/abusers get pregnant. Unfortunately this problem will not be eliminated. Confining these folks to a medical facility would seem the best course of action. However, I see legal issues regarding an individual's rights.

How are they getting them to start with? I had major surgery and I might as well have been chewing gum for pain. It would have been as effective as the pain medication I got.

If the College of OB-GYNs haven't addressed this issue, itprobably isn't a big problem, let's not study things about opiod abuse that might be useful.
