senate Bill S. 753

Social Security Benefits for All Legally Married Same-Sex Couples, Regardless of Zip Code

Argument in favor

Provides marriage equality with something akin to a reverse underground railroad. One step closer to equality that is long overdue.

“As somebody who has consistently voted to end discrimination in all forms — who voted against DOMA way back in the 1990s — I will do all that I can to continue our efforts to make this a nondiscriminatory society, whether those being discriminated against are transgender, gay, black or Hispanic.” [feelthebern.org]

My partner and I have been together for 8 years. We pay into social security and should be able to benefit from it as such.

Argument opposed

Forcing a state to recognize a union that it otherwise wouldn't infringes on that state's rights, and establishes a dangerous legal precedent.

Is this bill grants any rights to gay couples that are unavailable to straight couples, then we've just all lost our minds.

Couples that have developed a lasting and committed relationship should be entitled to receive their partners benefits regardless of their sexual orientation. Any other decision or outcome is discrimination.

Equality, justice and love are blind. Children can tell you what is fair and what isnt. Lets grow up together and stop singling out those among us who are different.

Give same sex civil unions the same benefits and responsibilities as opposite sex unions. With all the BS about gay "marriage ", it's just about the money.

This is hurting so many couples, whose only "crime" is falling in love.

This is a federal benefit. If the government can define the criteria for an eligible couple in a way that does not infringe on a state's prerogative, I'm will to say, yes, until I hear other arguments to the contrary.

Same sex couples put the same money into social security as any other couple. It is their right to see that money again.

If they're legally married, they're legally married, period. Vote yes.

Yes, same sex married couples should have the same rights as other married couples as far as the government is concerned. They pay the same social security taxes and deserve the same benefits. Just because some states are still stuck in the bigoted dark ages should not affect what should be a federal right to ALL married couples.

Let's get out of the age where certain groups don't get the same rights as others.

Anyone who pays to get SS benefits should be able to have said benefits, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality.

Married couples no matter the gender should receive the same benefits as myself and my husband... It's no different

It's a simple issue of federalism here. If states want to violate this, then they also violate the "full faith and credit" clause in the Constitution. States must recognize both federal law and the laws of other states.

Why is it that religious dogma, and right wing religious pandering always seem to weasel it's way into every facet of politics? Why is it that religious rights so much more important then gays? Short answer.... Because, religion pays, and pays well. The law is the law, keep the religion out of politics. Let's move on, besides civil rights are for everyone, just like the rights of a religious aren't for me. I haven't ever heard of a gay person who railed against your freedoms!

Enough with the so called "sanctity of marriage". There should be equal rights for all.
