Argument in favor

This bill would sanction Iran for its ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, and violating the UN arms embargo without violating the nuclear agreement. Russia needs to be punished for its meddling in elections, aggression in Ukraine & Crimea, and its support for Syrian tyrant Bashar Assad.

However, it seems like we only care about human rights violations when it's politically convenient. Show that we don't just care about the middle east because of oil and help those in Africa whose genitals are being mutliated for purity reasons, oppose persecution of gay people in Chechenya, etc

Argument opposed

This bill may not specifically target Iran’s nuclear program, but it would back Iran further into a corner and make nuclear compliance less likely. Expanding sanctions on Russia will only worsen the relationship between two of the world's most powerful nations, which will only make the situation worse.

America is not at odds with Iran. America's GOVERNMENT is INEXPLICABLY at odds with Iran. AMERICA wants to know why we support Saudi Arabia for doing everything this bill points out in Iran, except they do it WITH AMERICAN TAXPAYER DOLLARS. Stop fighting Iran. Stop supporting the Saudis.

Leave Iran alone. We have a good treaty that appears to be working for now why pick another fight? We have enough problems in our own back yard to last years. We need to recover our own sense of direction. This is just an attempt by this Administration to deflect attention to something other than the issues on our plate. Remember that this a religious conflict between the Sunni and Shia Islamic believers not a conflict built on any other ideology. Both sects have terrorist factions we know who Iran backs but Saudi Arabia has Wahhabism as it's main religion. All nine (9) terrorist on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. Wahhabis believe that all people who don't practice Sunni Islam are heathens and enemies. They ain't our friends. We should not take sides in their religious war.

    Do these politicians really think that pushing more sanctions on Iran is not going to effect the nuclear deal? It certainly will affect Iran's willingness to comply with the agreement. The United States has been selling arms to Saudi Arabia which they've been using to bomb civilians in Yemen. Should we sanction ourselves and Saudi Arabia? Saudi Arabia has also been providing support for terrorism by funding some extremist rebels in Syria and spreading Wahhabism around the world and yet they're one of our closest allies. The hypocrisy here is so clear! Our policy in the Middle East is a complete mess. We need to stop policing the world and making friends with authoritarian regimes.

    What happened to NATO deciding this? For once I agree with TuckerWantsLiberty. Sanction Saudi Arabia and all the rest not just Iran... they must have denied the building of a Trump hotel and got on the naughty list. Btw... if you end up approving this and sanctioning Iran, which means not give them my money... can I get that tax savings back? Full disclosure, I'm not a billionaire... so probably not, right?

    While I don't support the government of Iran, they are following the agreement we had in the nuclear deal. To sanction them again, which is the one thing we agreed we wouldn't do, it would serve only to increase support of the anti-american hardliners in the country.

    Further isolation of Iran is not in the best interest of the US. They are one of the more progressive and stable countries in the region. Isolation will send the wrong message to a country that has lived up to it's side of the nuclear agreement with the US and just reelected a progressive president. Remember that Saudi Arabia is Sunni, as is Al Queda and ISIS. Iran is mostly Shia. The Sunni's want to dominate the region and have been pushing this anti Iran agenda. Let's be smart for once and stay out of it.

    We already have sanctions in place for Iran. Instead of expanding them, apply sanctions consistently toward all countries engaged in promoting terrorism. We look so shallow because it is so obvious we stand up against countries or cozy up to other countries based on our own selfish interests. This exacerbates the frustration of would-be terrorists. Our arms deals create more terrorism because people rightly blame our country for fueling wars on their homelands. How would we like it? Right now we have Russians meddling in our elections, and we do not like it one bit! The decisions of the American government over decades make our country at times look like a self-serving bully. I do not think this bill will help motivate Iran at all. Let's clean up our own internal act before sanctioning others further. Right now, what ICE is doing to immigrant families is a form of terrorism. Our government needs to pass immigration reform legislation now. Let's handle this problem with intelligence and wisdom in a comprehensive way instead of piecemeal. Kids have lost DACA status and are afraid. Children have lost parents who have been deported. This is a travesty and the direct result of Congress procrastinating dealing with illegal immigration in a studied and humane way. They want to do the bidding of American banks and corporations, when they should be addressing the serious problems at home which American citizens have made clear they want addressed.

    Wake up! Iran has a moderate government now. It's not democracy but still better. The Saudis (extremist Wahhabism) have been wanting to gain control over anybody who follows a different kind of Islam.
