I understand why anyone would think this is a good idea - on paper, it's a great idea - but so far, its implementation has costed more than it has saved. All it does now is perpetuate stigmatization of America's poor.

This idea was tried in Florida already. The result was that the drug testing cost more than any savings realized.

We already have all the documentation we need to see that those on welfare use less than the general public. Now testing members of Congress since they are employees of the taxpayers, that I could get behind. Check for alcohol & drug use.

Time to start helping those with drug problems rather than punishing them. Lets stop declaring war on fellow citizens who have emotional challenges and turn to drugs. It would be much cheaper to reach out and help them.

Let's drug test our congressmen instead.

I voted nay because its an invasion of privacy. Turn back time so I can kill that idiot who handed over his/her urine without a fight. I would have said "fuck off". Who are the nutjobs that want to control everybody else?

As many states that require drug screening for benefits have found out, drug screening has: found few 'fails', incurred added costs to providing services, and adds a shaming burden on those already asking for help to pee in a cup. The overwhelming truth is that the poor cannot afford drugs, often the ones they are prescribed. Yes there are always cheats, but let's start at the top and have both houses pass the same test they expect their constituents to pass, or forfeit pension, insurance, and salary.

MONEY. Every vote in favor of this issue is backed with the faulty logic of "I take a test to earn my money, so should the freeloaders." So, let's waste tax dollars by testing everyone on welfare. How about this, take the tax dollars that all those in favor of drug testing would theoretically have to spend and instead, create jobs and hire people to provide greater oversight of where the welfare funds end up and who is using them. Want to bet that in very short order all of the FRAUD and also misappropriated funds will begin to turn up. I do not disagree at all that there are people who abuse the system. I have seen it happen, know people who have done it and constantly hear of cases where hundreds of thousands of welfare funds have gone to one individual because the people who have the responsibility to make sure the money is going to the people that actually need it are overwhelmed. If instead of WASTING money, like all of the people who support this idea of drug testing people receiving welfare seem to want to do, why not try actually administering the system properly from the start?
