senate Bill S. 302

Does The U.S. Need A Special Envoy To Protect The International LGBTQ Community?

Argument in favor

The U.S. has voiced a commitment to protect the LGBTQ community's human rights; there needs to be a comprehensive strategy for addressing the discrimination they face overseas.

U.S. contribution could make a real, positive impact in the protection of the LGBTQ rights around the world.

The argument against this is week. That because there is strong opposition to LGBTQ rights domestically, we shouldn't try federally and internationally. We live in a democracy, there is strong opposition to every argument. This nation is founded on inalienable rights - it doesn't always mean our citizens live up to that ideal. But it's an ideal. We aspire to it, we should never stop aspiring to it. Thats why we should lead this envoy for the International LGBTQ Community.

Argument opposed

LGBTQ rights are a controversial topic domestically — can the U.S. really expect foreign governments come to an agreement on the LGBTQ issues?

I agree with Countable member Neftali, who said: "Western countries are too politically correct to handle the overarching threats of Islamism, how does anyone expect for the U.S. to go in with a scalpel and with surgical precision extract a central tenet of a religious ideology, i.e., kill homosexuals? We have our hands tied with the bigger issue of terrorism against everyone. Christians are being decimated, women are being forced into sex slavery. What about the Christians (gay or straight)? What about the women (gay or straight)? It is obvious the politically correct elitists refuse to acknowledge what the real issues afflicting Islamic countries truly are, therefore, steer clear of this bill and vote no!"

I think they have enough federally funded advocacy groups to go around.

There are things more urgent than this, like protecting the Christians from the ongoing Middle East Holocaust.

Sadly, yes. Other countries are influenced by outsiders who spread lies and fear. That has to be countered. A few people can be very effective.

I support this bill with a NO vote. I'm to understand that Human Rights being separated or has LGBT Human Rights mover ahead or behind Human Rights. For myself, I'll let Human Rights cover all humans.

Their rights deserve advocacy the same as any other group of people that are killed for being who they are.

This is ridiculous. It would be another bureaucratic branch that would stir up controversy and find problems that don't exist. Dedicating an entire branch to a specific group of people would create more division than union.

LGBTQ people should have the same protection as all other citizens. We don't need to prioritize one group over another, there are plenty of other groups facing just as bad issues. Maybe a bill to protect human rights for everyone would be more fair.

An envoy to dictate to all other governments how to run their countries? This must be your attempt to cater to a very small, specific group of exquisitely delicate, and petulantly demanding, constituents so you will get that faction's votes. Otherwise, Markey, you have to be insane or just plain stupid!

There are plenty of other international issues to focus on other than the international LGBTQ community.

The international LGBT+ community suffers 100X worse than LGBT americans. Across Africa and the Middle East, LGBT+ members are legally executed, tortured, and are basically illegal. In Russia "gay propaganda" is illegal, it includes signs or hints of homosexuality being shown infront of others. Even if we fail at this, at least knowing the US tried to help others live in peace is way better than knowing the US sat back as we watched other governments murder their citizens.

You're kidding me, right? Out of all the issues we're facing (like Christians being executed in the Middle East) why would anyone in their right mind spend more on "protecting" LGBT communities? Liberals are unbelievably delusional.

How about we get away from creating special classes of people and just realize that we are all equal under the law.
