senate Bill S. 2673

Does The U.S. Need To Strengthen Its Alliances With Israel?

Argument in favor

Israel is America’s closest ally in the Middle East. Continuing to collaborate on issues related to defense and energy is in the best interest of America's national security.

Israel is the lone democracy in the Middle East, and the U.S. has been its oldest ally. Those ties should be continually strengthened into the future.

The U.S. and Israel have tremendous commonalities in social, political, and strategic spheres. Continued collaboration is not only just both in the best interest of both countries.

Israel is our only consistent ally in the region. We need to be their best friend. Our current efforts in the region is an insult to our friend and a joke to our enemies.

Argument opposed

The U.S. has given Israel weapons that were used in Gaza, and unintentionally killed civilians. If the U.S. wants to maintain global credibility, it needs to reassess the types of weapons it sends to Israel.

We are reinforcing a military state that is increasingly at odds with US foreign goals in the region.

In recent years, Israel has been a provacateur with its insistence on building settlements in the West Bank despite previous agreements to halt or curtail that activity. It seems to me that the goal of Israel is to take possession of the land proposed for a Palestinian state through its building. In that way, Israel contributes to maintaining conflict in the region and exhibits an attitude no different than the oft-decried Hezbollah stance that a two -state solution will not be tolerated (which Netanyahu explicitly articulated during his campaign). Our velvet gloved negotiating stance with and support of Israel also contributes to the negative perception of, mistrust of, and hostility toward our country and her citizens, placing us at risk. I don't see any reason to increase that support and wonder if we should reduce it. I'm also not certain what material and meaningful support Israel renders to us in the region. Finally, Netanyahu and the Republican-controlled Congress behavior in his coming to speak before lawmakers without the courtesy if notifying the White House, and Netanyahu's disrespectful remarks following suggested to me a disturbing level of contempt.

Not unless they stop violating UN policy by illegally occupying Palestine.

Israel is already a strong independent nation with nuclear weapons and powerful military force that rivals that of its neighbors. We the United States need to focus our support for nations who are truly in need of military aid.

Israel is a valued ally, this does not justify our line towing as they continue to mistreat the palestinian people and obstruct the path to peace. If Israel wants more support they should show that they're willing to take a leadership role in the middle eastern peace process rather than dragging it down.

"I will bless those that bless thee and curse those that curse thee and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." America needs to quit telling Israel that it can't fight to protect itself.

Israel may be an ally, but that doesn't mean we should support everything they do. Israel and Palestine need to work together to find a peaceful resolution.

As a Jewish person I firmly believe that Israel's government needs to reform its human rights practices. I believe in the right for Israel to exist, of course, but I think strengthening our (already strong) support for Israel would effectively give the go-head to continue violating the rights of Palestinian civilians.

Please stop all ties, support, and funding to this apartheid government. It goes against everything our country stands for.

We don't need to tie ourselves to a sinking ship. Every other country in the world condemns Israel's behavior towards Palestine, and whether they are correct in their assessment, Israel should be working as hard as it can to strengthen relations if it want partners like the US to back it. If they are going to make this about Israel against the world the US should have no part in it. The best outcome for everyone is if Israel backs out of its illegal settlements, gives the land and resources back to the people who they belong to in a show of friendship, shapes themselves back into a benevolent superpower to the world instead of a vicious conqueror seeking to impose the luxury of western nobility out of the bloodshed of the poor and defenseless.

The Israeli government already exploits our unwavering support and kills thousands of Palestinian civilians each year. Should we give them a somehow more unconditional support? No.
