senate Bill S. 2485

Should Taxpayer Funds Not be Spent at Properties Owned by the President, Vice President, or Cabinet Secretaries?

Argument in favor

The president, vice president, and cabinet members shouldn’t be allowed to use their political positions to enrich themselves or their companies. Barring the use of taxpayer funds to pay for government employees’ stays at properties owned by executive branch officials will help end this form of graft.

Do not spend one penny of my tax dollars at any trump property- you should be actively working to keep my tax dollars out of trump’s pockets and out of the pockets of his corrupt cronies. This bill must be made into law and must apply to all federal government elected and appointed officials.

Argument opposed

Blocking taxpayer funds’ use at properties owned by members of the executive branch is unfair to such individuals and their companies. As long as the members of the executive branch don’t control their companies themselves, their companies shouldn’t be penalized for their relationships to elected officials.

Who cares. If this was a Dem President they would make it mandatory to use the properties. You people are so stupid. This one won’t even make it to the floor.

Only if it also extends to all members of congress and includes funding to any organizations that senators and representatives are also connected to.

I am tired of our would be Monarch in Chief considering the laws of the land as just minor speed bumps to his personal ambitions. It’s illegal! Executive Branch travelers used to be, and I believe still are, given a daily travel allowance that cannot be recompensed beyond the limit, except for extraordinary circumstances- for example, Secret Service employees who are required to stay with the president. Staying at trump properties would certainly exceed that allowance for everyone else. Since Pence’s motorcade expenses for the special limousine motorcade services for the 180-mile drive from trump resort properties to state meetings in Ireland reportedly cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars alone– and was a completely unnecessary added expense, because he chose or was directed to stay at a trump property- at I presume higher rates than meeting locale rooms. This stuff obviously needs some controls. So, YES. If the administration will not respect ethical, legal behavior, the people have no choice but to force the issue.

Please stop lying to to public and say it’s a “matter of convenience” to have government officials, secret service, and foreign leaders stay at trump owned properties. This is a blatant lie and we see right through it. If we have to make these all specific laws for Trump’s remaining time in office, we will.

Emoluments! Your job is to serve the will of the people. Not to line your pockets at the expense of the people or to enrich yourself by monetary gain because of your position.

If divestment prior to taking office isn’t going to be required as it should be, this bill at a minimum would eliminate such obvious and embarrassing violations of the emoluments clause.

We already have laws (2635.702 Use of public office for private gain. An employee shall not use his public office for his own private gain, for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity, including nonprofit organizations of which the employee is an officer or member, and persons with whom the employee has or seeks employment or business relations. ). The president has FAILED to divest from his businesses, continues to promote his family’s financial interests, and NO ONE has taken this man to task. If you think passing a more explicit law three years into this lawless presidency will help, do it. But, for the love of our country, PLEASE ENFORCE it!!!

Why is this even a question? We have the emoluments clause. It’s just that president chump thinks he’s king and can ignore any policy that restrains him or doesn’t allow him to get rich. And that the republicans are too spineless to call him on it.
